what should we do with Santa?

My dear friends over at Girl Talk addressed this issue today. Should we celebrate Santa? What do we do with him? How do we prepare our children for the questions that will come when we don't celebrate him?

Please go to their blog and read the couple of posts they have linked from Thabiti Anyabwile. Very insightful.

After you have read the articles, feel free to comment. I would love to hear from you!

Tonya,

Thanks so much for posting a link to this article. Jason and I are in agreement that we aren't going to teach Riley (or any other future children) to "believe" in Santa Claus, but I have been concerned about how we are going to deal with how this decision would affect other people. My mom is very disappointed about our decision. My sister and brother-in-law are planning on teaching their son (who is the same age as Riley) about Santa. How do we graciously manage all of these relationships regarding Santa? The articles gave some great tips. Ultimately, I think it's important to remember why we made this decision. We want the focus at Christmas to be on Christ. Hopefully, we'll be able to respond to these situations in a way that honors Christ and possibly turn the conversation to spiritual matters.

i did a post on this last year too-- i can't remember the title of it, but it included a good story to read to kids.

i never believed in santa and i didn't want brycen to (ryan thinks i'm sorta crazy about this!)... brycen talks about santa- but if you ask him who he is he says "a guy dressed up in a costume" and he knows that we celebrate christmas b/c of jesus' birthday-- my favorite thing to do instead of making cookies for "santa" is to make a birthday cake for jesus and sing happy birthday to him on christmas morning.
