how school has changed

We recently purchased a copy of the New England Primer of 1777. Years ago this was the main book used to teach children how to read in school. It is so sad to read through it and compare the content with that of today's teaching. Thought I would give a little sample:

An Alphabet of Lessons for Youth

A wise son make a glad father, but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Come unto Christ all you who labor and are heavy laden and he will give you rest.

Do not the abominable thing which I hate says the Lord.

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
